Whistler

Whistler is in British Columbia, Canada near Vancouver . A major ski resort and location for the alpine events of the 2010 Winter Olympics. In summer Whistler offers mountain biking, golf, fishing, white-water rafting, hiking trails and natural parks.

Tucked within the shadows of the white-capped peaks of Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains, Whistler, British Columbia is one of the world's foremost year-round mountain resorts.

Located north of Vancouver on Canada's picturesque Sea-to-Sky Highway (Highway 99), Whistler attracts more than two million outdoor enthusiasts and extreme sports fanatics annually from all over the world. Skiers and snowboarders delight in the more-than 200 marked trails of powdery white stuff. Other winter activities include snowshoeing, ice skating, heli-skiing, snowmobiling, dog sledding, and sleigh rides, among many others.

When the snow and ice melts away and spring reveals itself, Whistler transforms itself into a paradise for hikers, bikers, and rock-climbers. Other popular summer activities include, but are not limited to, fishing, canoing, rafting, bungee jumping, and paintball. As if its reputation as a renowned ski resort isn't enough, Whistler also has the distinction of being a world-class golf destination. The stunning mountain landscape makes the perfect backdrop for several challenging courses.

For those who like to keep fit but would prefer to spend their time in “the great indoors,” the Meadow Park Sports Center offers a fully-equipped gym and facilities for swimming, squash, skating, and fitness classes. The Whistler Core & Climbing Center allows visitors of all ability levels the chance to try a new sport with the help of a trained climber or prepare for that more ambitious outdoor climb on one of the nearby mountains.

Even non-thrill-seekers can find something exciting to pass the time in Whistler. For travelers looking for a bit of pampering, Whistler is home to several day spas and salons. A variety of shops – from familiar retail chains to funky boutiques – are available within Whistler Village, along with trendy art galleries, unique museums, a local theatre where you can take in live performances or lectures, and a cinema.

Whistler boasts a wide selection of restaurants, bars, and clubs. Visitors can find nearly any type of cuisine – from French to Mexican to Japanese – in Whistler and the surrounding areas. Eateries range from casual, family-friendly delis and cafés to posh, five-star restaurants. The resort's many local pubs are popular spots for unwinding after a long day on the slopes or hiking the rugged peaks.

Whistler is also the host of many unique festivals and events throughout the year, including November's Cornucopia, a celebration of wine and food; the Whistler Film Festival, an exciting four-day event that showcases over 90 films and includes a free outdoor screening, usually held in December; and several sports-related festivals, such as the TELUS World Ski and Snowboard Festival and Crankworx, which is dedicated to mountain biking. In 2010, Whistler will host many of the alpine events of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.
