A Guide to Canada’s Rail Tours

Whistler accommodation

Canada has one of the most breathtaking landscapes in the world. Touring this beautiful country is becoming a part of everyone’s bucket list. It offers vast landscape with snow-capped mountains, crystal clear lakes and emerald green forests, cosmopolitan cities and vast wilderness.

There are several rail tours in Canada that offers this breathtaking experience. There’s the famous Whistler Sea to Sky Climb - a day tour between Vancouver and Whistler, The Canadian – a four-night complete travel from Toronto to Winnipeg, Edmonton, Jasper and Vancouver, and The Ocean – a stunning journey along St. Lawrence River between Halifax and Montreal.

There are two popular train operators: VIA Rail Canada and Rocky Mountaineer. The VIA Rail Canada runs long-distance trains between the country’s major cities and even all the way across Toronto and Vancouver. The Rocky Mountaineer is a luxury train that runs through the Rocky Mountains from Vancouver via Kamloops and Jasper.

As for the train accommodations, if doing The Canadian journey, the VIA Rail can provide the best accommodation. It travels in an original 1955 stainless steel coach. The Economy Class has reclining seats while the Sleeper Touring Class has private sleeping cars.

The Rocky Mountaineer has three service classes: GoldLeaf, SilverLeaf and RedLeaf. The GoldLeaf is the ritziest coach – two level glass domed with full length windows. The SilverLeaf has single level glass doomed with large windows. The RedLeaf has reclining seats with large picture windows.

Several Passes are also offered by VIA Rail Canada and Rocky Mountaineer. Any passenger can choose the best deal that will work for him or her.

Whistler is highly recommended as one of the best places to visit. It’s a resort town in the province of British Columbia, roughly about 125 kilometers or 78 miles north of Vancouver. An estimate of two million people visits this popular resort every year. The primary reasons for visiting are mountain biking and alpine skiing at Whistler-Blackcomb. It has been voted as one of the top destinations in North America by major ski magazines since the 1990s.

This town played a significant role in the 2010 Winter Olympics. Most of the alpine, skeleton, bobsled, Nordic and luge events were held here.

There’s a special Whistler Mountaineer train that will run through the world’s most craggy fjords and mountains. It’s a day trip composed of exploring Whistler Village – one of the most popular ski resorts of North America, stop at Shannon Falls – British Columbia’s 3rd highest waterfalls, rainforest guided walk and a Sea-to-Sky highway return to Vancouver via mini-coach.

Several Passes are also offered by VIA Rail Canada and Rocky Mountaineer. Any passenger can choose the best deal that will work for him or her. If traveling coast to coast, the Canarailpass system is the best. It’s an Economy class of VIA Rail that is good for 7 one-way trips within 21 days. If exploring southern Quebec and Ontario, Canarailpass-Corridor is best. It’s also an Economy class of VIA Rail that is good for 7 one-way trips and valid within 7 days. Trains in Canada can be expensive but the cost can be cut down if focusing on one region only.

It’s a full-day rail tour experience from Vancouver to Whistler. The train features interpretative route commentaries and Heritage Observation Car access for the world’s most astonishing views.
